Pune to Mahabaleshwar Guide: Best Time, Route, Fare & Things to Do

By Adarsh Tours & Travels · Updated July 2026 · 6 min read

Mahabaleshwar is Pune's favourite weekend escape — a cool hill station of strawberry farms, valley viewpoints and old-world charm, close enough for a day trip but worth an overnight stay. This guide covers the distance, the best season, the route and what a cab costs, plus the sights you shouldn't miss.

How far is Mahabaleshwar from Pune?

Pune to Mahabaleshwar is about 120 km. The drive takes roughly 3 to 3.5 hours. Most of it is easy highway running; the last stretch is the scenic ghat climb up from Wai, which is where the cool air and views begin.

Best time to visit

Mahabaleshwar is pleasant almost year-round, but each season has its character:

  • Winter (Nov–Feb): the best time — crisp weather, clear valley views and peak strawberry season.
  • Summer (Mar–Jun): a welcome escape from Pune's heat; still green and comfortable.
  • Monsoon (Jul–Sep): lush, misty and dramatic with full waterfalls — but roads can be foggy and slippery, so an experienced driver matters.

Cab fare from Pune

VehicleSeatsRate
Swift Dzire / Hyundai Aura (sedan)4₹12/km
Maruti Ertiga CNG7₹15/km
Toyota Innova Crysta7₹20/km
Force Urbania (group)9–26₹30–50/km

For the ghat section, an Ertiga or Innova Crysta is the more comfortable choice, especially for families. Round-trip and overnight packages are quoted on call. Booking one cab for the whole trip is cheaper and easier than local transport once you're there.

Tip: Keep the same cab and driver for local sightseeing in Mahabaleshwar — the points are spread out and public transport is limited on the hills.

Things to do & top points

  • Venna Lake — boating and horse rides in the heart of town.
  • Arthur's Seat — the iconic cliff viewpoint over the Savitri valley.
  • Wilson Point (Sunrise Point) — the highest point, best at dawn.
  • Pratapgad Fort — a short drive away, rich in Maratha history.
  • Mapro Garden — strawberry produce, shakes and a popular food stop.
  • Elephant's Head & Kate's Point — more valley viewpoints on the Mahabaleshwar–Panchgani belt.

If you have an extra half-day, add Panchgani (about 20 km away) with Table Land and the parsi-era charm on the way.

Day trip or overnight?

A day trip works if you leave Pune early (by 6 AM) and stick to the main points. But Mahabaleshwar rewards a slower pace — an overnight stay lets you catch a sunrise at Wilson Point and enjoy the town without rushing. For overnight trips, we quote a package that includes the driver's stay.
